Free access to 250 Caribbean e-books for UWI users

For Release Upon Receipt - Thursday, February 16, 2017

The UWI is pleased to announce that from September 5 2016, 250 UWI Press e-books will be made available to all UWI staff and students. Users will have free access to the UWI Press e-book digital platform via UWILinC, the University Libraries information resources discovery interface. The initiative comes from a collaborative effort between the Digital Library Services Centre of the Alma Jordan Library at the St Augustine Campus and The University of the West Indies Press, (UWI Press) and is in keeping with a mandate to support the dissemination of knowledge by providing open access to the digitally preserved intellectual output of The UWI. The availability of the e-books was launched at The Caribbean Digital Publishing conference themed #theOnlineMind: Crossing the Digital Divide which took place last November.

The introduction of e-books marks a new era for the award-winning UWI Press which has published over 350 print books since it was founded in 1992. The UWI Press is a non-profit publisher of scholarly books in 14 academic disciplines. It is particularly known for publishing authors of Caribbean history, Caribbean cultural studies, Caribbean literature, Caribbean linguistics, gender studies, environmental studies, education and political science. UWI Press books are peer-reviewed and approved by an editorial committee comprised of local and international scholars.

Frank Soodeen, Campus Librarian at the Alma Jordan Library said “We aim to gather the research and scholarship of members of The UWI community in one place. The Digital Library Service provides a platform for the collection, organisation, access and preservation of scholarly information in digital formats and we are excited about this landmark initiative between the library and The UWI Press”.

This digital venture provides a way for The UWI Press and its stakeholders to enhance regional cooperation and integration, to ensure control of Caribbean content and to provide electronic access to Caribbean content to the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean in a quick, affordable format.
