During the twenty-third session of UNESCO'S World Heritage Committee held in Morocco from 29th. November to 4 December, 1999, a decision was taken to inscribe the Brimstone Hill fortress National Park on the World Heritage List of Cultural Properties "of outstanding universal value". To commemorate this inscription, the Government of St. Christopher and Nevis, in collaboration with the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Society, will host a Symposium and Inscription Ceremony in St. Kitts on 3 and 4 October, 2000.
The Symposium, which has as its theme "The Historical Fortifications of the Caribbean" will bring together current scholarship on Spanish, English, French and Dutch fortifications so as to demonstrate their interconnectedness and elucidate their significance to Caribbean and World history.
At the Inscription Ceremony, a certificate of inscription is to be presented by a representative of the World Heritage Committee and a plaque unveiled by the Prime Minister. This will be followed by the colourful 'Changing of the Guard' by the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force and Band.
Registration Fee for the Symposium is US$50 when paid by the 29th. September. Late registration will be accepted up to 9 am on 3 October for a fee of US$60. Money orders should be made out and mailed to

Taxi fares from and to the airport are the responsibility of registrants/attendees. One-way fare ranges from US$7-$11.
Transportation will be provided between hotels and Symposium venue at no extra cost.
Fee transportation will be provided also to the registrants between hotels and the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park for the Inscription Ceremony.
There will be an optional post- Symposium Excursion on 5 October. This will be an island tour with 2 or 3 stops, including Brimstone Hill. Lunches will be provided. The fee is US$35. Registration and payment for the Excursion should be made at the Symposium Secretariat by 9 am on October 4.
