The possibility of conserving energy to combat higher global oil prices and high dependence upon oil for the energy needs has elicited a good deal of comment in recent years. Energy efficiency and energy conservation are possibly the most effective short term solution to energy consumption concerns in the Caribbean and may be considered the first action in any implementation process. Energy conservation as a first step may be implemented with less capital investment than renewable energy solutions. This therefore offers the Caribbean an affordable and appropriate path to implementing a sustainable solution to the current energy challenge.

This research will examine the measurement of efficiency in Institutional buildings, Office buildings, and Hotel buildings in order to gain a better understanding of the factors that affect energy efficiency and establish baseline data for future use by professionals. The results of the research will also facilitate the development of a model that will predict energy efficiency
in hotels. This study is limited to electricity consumption which is mainly generated from non-renewable fossil based products and supplied by a local utility company.
