Cave Hill Students off to Suzhou

For Release Upon Receipt - Monday, September 3, 2018

To Suzhou we go! (From left, front row): O'Shara Mason, Asharia Nurse, Romario Renee, Tessa John and Nicholas Jordan, with classmates (from left, back row): Andrew Lewis, Khalil Greene and Jamar Griffith.

Later this month, nine students from The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill will continue their studies in Software Engineering at the Suzhou Global Institute of Software Technology (GIST) in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. They are: Jamar Griffith, Andrew Lewis, Tessa John, O’shara Mason, Nicholas Jordan, Romario Renee, Nigel Francis, Khalil Greene and Asharia Nurse.

The students will spend two years at GIST as part of arrangements made under The UWI China Institute of Information Technology (UWICIIT). They are the first cohort of students going to China under the initiative, and will join 18 colleagues from The UWI Mona, where the BSc in Software Engineering is also being offered.

During a congratulatory send-off, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Principal Professor V Eudine Barriteau, underscored the importance of their path-breaking mission to China for themselves and the campus.

“You are the first [cohort], so when you go to Suzhou in China, of course you are representing yourself, you are representing Cave Hill campus and you are representing The University of the West Indies,” she told them. “But I don’t want you while you’re there to think of that [in a manner that] it becomes overwhelming and daunting. I want you to think of doing your very best and dealing with the challenges as they arise on a day-by-day basis.”

Preparation for the journey began from the first year of the programme with Mandarin Chinese courses taught by the Confucius Institute. Language courses will continue during their time in Suzhou, with the eventual aim of proficiency by the end of the four-year programme. Students are also educated in the latest software engineering theories and practices and mobile technologies to prepare them for careers in software engineering, software testing, software quality assurance, technical writing and software design, among other possibilities. Additionally, students will benefit from a six-month internship at an IT company, allowing them to meaningfully apply their knowledge and skill in the area.
