Pace Like Fire!

For Release Upon Receipt - Tuesday, September 25, 2018

Twenty-four young cricketers received the chance to hone their bowling skills through the Pace Like Fire programme which ran from September 3rd to 4th, 2018.

Pace Like Fire is an initiative of The UWI Faculty of Sport and is intended to identify and develop the skills of young male and female players across the region with raw bowling pace. Akeem Dewar, Regional Sport Coordinator at The UWI Open Campus said the ultimate goal was “to get a few of the participants to matriculate to their national teams and international cricket” while paying attention to their overall improvement and development as fast bowlers.

The regional initiative began in Trinidad and Tobago on August 8, and was also held in Guyana; St Lucia; St Kitts and Nevis, and Jamaica.

Sessions included one-on-ones with coaches, group coaching sessions with participants, video review sessions, practice and match simulations and lessons in sport psychology.

Participants were also able to access state-of-the-art scientific testing and analysis, mental skills training, strength and conditioning, and nutritional support.

TheFaculty of Sport was officially launched in July, 2017 to accelerate the building of a regional sporting industry. There are academies of sport on each of the landed campuses of The UWI, tasked with delivering academic programmes, sports at all levels, and sports-related community outreach.
