Story Highlights

The UWI Cave Hill Campus is in line to reap significant benefits following a successful mission to Kenya by a delegation headed by Principal, Professor the Most Honourable Eudine Barriteau

Seeking to expand international ties as one of the orders of business in 2020, Principal and Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Cave Hill Campus, Professor The Most Honourable V Eudine Barriteau, led a three-member delegation to Kenya, January 7-11, 2020 for high level talks with top government and education officials.

The Cave Hill contingent which included Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Professor Justin Robinson and chair of Cave Hill’s Task Force on the Faculty of Medical Sciences International Outreach, Dr. Kenneth Connell met with cabinet secretaries and officials of the two top Kenyan universities to begin the process of cementing areas of interest and agreements.

These meetings follow on from the visits of President of Kenya His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta, to Barbados in August and Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley’s trip to Kenya in early December to establish a bilateral relationship between the two nations. Discussions to open the way for medical education programmes quickly widened in scope to include the areas of culture, international trade and bio-security.

Professor Barriteau is now progressing the next phase by establishing institutional relationships in Kenya. Her team’s first order of business was to meet with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to prepare an overview of the visit. This was followed by meetings with the Cabinet Secretaries of Education and Health respectively to review areas of collaboration in those sectors.

A meeting was held with the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi highlighted areas within the medical and public health programmes, which saw the signing of a framework of cooperation. Professor Barriteau also delivered a lecture at that university on the theme “Gender and Migration”.

There was also a visit to Kenyatta University where a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor looked at identifying areas of collaboration in trade, biosecurity and Artificial Intelligence, followed by the signing off on a framework of cooperation.

The final work day was spent back at the University of Nairobi for meetings with the Dean of the School of Medicine and the Dean of the School of Arts and Design to explore possibilities for collaborations in those fields, along with tours of the institution. There, Dr. Connell presented a lecture in which he expanded on medical infrastructure of Cave Hill.

Professor Barriteau has previously led a mission to the African continent in establishing an academic partnership with Ghana in 2017, and an MOU was signed between University of Ghana, Legon and the UWI Cave Hill Campus the following year.
