Dr. DeShong takes up Diplomatic Appointment

For Release Upon Receipt - Monday, March 16, 2020

Story Highlights

Former Head of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies: Nita Barrow Unit at the Cave Hill Campus, Her Excellency Dr. Halimah DeShong has taken up a diplomatic post at the United Nations.

PHOTO-2020-01-08-16-58-39-3-16-2020.jpgEffective January 1, she began serving as an ambassador to the UN within the St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) delegation. She serves as Second Deputy Permanent Representative and Senior Special Advisor to the Permanent Mission of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to the United Nations. SVG took up its seat as a non-permanent member on the United Nations Security Council, the smallest island state to do so.

In her new role, Her Excellency Dr DeShong will oversee a number of matters, including several relating to women, peace and security; youth peace and security; and children in armed conflict.

Speaking ahead of taking up her official appointment, she said: “It’s an opportunity for me to learn a different kind of work around feminist and gender. I’m anxious, excited, encouraged, humbled. I’ve been working at The University of the West Indies in the Institute of Gender and Development Studies and I don’t think I could have had a better place to prepare me to enter a new space and do a new kind of development work.

“I’m excited for St Vincent and the Grenadines and the Caribbean. I can now explore a new dimension of the work I’ve done over the years on gender-based violence and violence in general.”

Her academic work has largely focused on gender-based violence, feminist research methodologies, and anti/decolonial feminisms.

Her Excellency Dr. Deshong has been seconded to the post for two years.
