Lionfish : Projects

The Barbados Lionfish Project
The Barbados Lionfish Project was principally designed to collect and archive ‘pre-lionfish invasion’ baseline data on the reef and reef fishery, thereby providing valuable opportunity to quantitatively examine the real impact of lionfish in the ‘post-lionfish invasion’ period. It was undertaken by the Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES) and the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences of the University of the West Indies (UWI), in collaboration with partners including the Coastal Zone Management Unit (CZMU) and the Fisheries Division (FD) with funding from the Natural Heritage Department (NHD) of the Government of Barbados.

Tracking the Red Lionfish Invasion in Barbados
This project seeks to identify/track what has taken place in Barbados since the first confirmed lionfish (Pterois volitans) sighting in November 2011, increase the amount of data available on the lionfish and provide a central location for the dissemination of information, data, events communications etc. The project is being led by the Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES), University of the West Indies and includes participation from technical and agency staff as well as governmental and non-governmental stakeholders associated with marine research, conservation, and natural resource monitoring and management. The project (BID-CA2016-0013-SMA) was facilitated through the Biodiversity Information for Development (BID) programme, led by the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and funded by the European Union (EU).
