Dear Prospective Student,
There are so many medical schools around the world! How do you know which one to choose? Accreditation is a major consideration. With a fully accredited Faculty of Medical Sciences, the Cave Hill Campus is a good choice!
What is Accreditation?
- The National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA) in the USA has determined that the standards used to accredit our Faculty of Medical Sciences are comparable to those used to accredit medical schools in the United States.
What Accreditation Means to You
- Assures you that your medical degree is quality and internationally accepted
- Improves your chances of being accepted for residency in regional and US hospitals
- Adds a layer of quality to your application to practice in the US
What Accreditation Says about an Institution
- Faculty that have specific internationally recognised qualifications to teach you
- A curriculum that has been fully vetted by accreditation authorities
- A programme of study that prepares you for all the rigors of a professional medical career
- Has all the required facilities, equipment, tools, and learning support to help you succeed

How can you check the claims of accreditation by medical schools?
Not all accreditation bodies are the same.
Local: Local accreditation bodies, such as the Barbados Accreditation Council (BAC), register local, regional and foreign based institutions that offer educational courses in their country. They also credit and re-accredit programmes of study and institutions operating in their country.
When you graduate from a medical school that only has BAC accreditation, you will still need to take the Caribbean Association of Medical Councils’ (CAMC) exam to practice in Barbados.
Regional: Subject specific, regional bodies, such as Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP), accredit schools and programmes based on internationally recognised quality. From the CAAM-HP website:
“CAAM-HP is the legally constituted body established in 2003 under the aegis of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), empowered to determine and prescribe standards and to accredit programmes of medical, dental, veterinary and other health professions education on behalf of the contracting parties in CARICOM. CAAM-HP will serve as the means of providing the assurance of quality that generates confidence in the principal stakeholders, students and the public.”
When you graduate from a CAAM-HP accredited medical school, such as the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the Cave Hill Campus, you can practice in the Caribbean and affords you the option to practice in the United States.
