The University of the West Indies,Cave Hill, Barbados, undertakes the major part of its clinical training at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) located in Bridgetown, Barbados. This is the island's only public hospital and main training facility.
There are a number of internship opportunities available to international students at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Interested persons should be aware of the following guidelines:
1. Incoming elective students must be enrolled in the 4th or 5th Year of an approved and accredited undergraduate medical programme
2. Clerkship rotations run for a minimum of 4 weeks
3. The following disciplines currently accept elective students -
- Accident & Emergency
- Anaesthesiology
- Child Health
- Community Health
- ENT
- Family Medicine
- General Medicine
- General Surgery
- Obstetrics & Gynaecology
- Ophthalmology
- Orthopaedics
- Pathology
- Psychiatry
4. The following fees will apply:
- US$100.00 Application fee (non-refundable fee for all applicants)
- US$200.00 per week for an elective period of up to 8 weeks
- US$300.00 per week for an elective period in excess of 8 weeks, and to a maximum of 12 weeks
5. Expressions of interest in
QEH electives should be submitted via this

6. Students applying for elective placement should provide a
CV detailing clinical experience along with a
Letter of Recommendation from your home institution.
