About the Programme

The M.Sc. Banking and Finance provides exposure to advanced banking and finance concepts, knowledge and skills, which are academically rigorous and offer practical application in the workplace, in a highly competitive and rapidly changing sector.  The programme seeks to develop a formally trained cadre of banking and finance industry professionals, specifically targeting persons who desire formal academic qualifications to bolster their work experience and advance their technical competencies.

This programme is hybrid. Our hybrid format transcends the standard online or face to face learning experience. Some classes are fully online [synchronous engagements], while others are in hybrid format, where students have the option to attend classes in-person or remotely. Finally, some final exams are in person, which are either held at the UWI Cave Hill Barbados or one of our regional /international campus partners.

What Will I Study?

The programme has the following objectives: 
  • To develop well - rounded professionals who have a sound and comprehensive knowledge of critical issues important in the banking and financial services sector as well as in the general business environment.
  • To enable students to develop knowledge and skills in specialist areas, such as Real Estate and Corporate Finance.
  • To develop advanced capacity for critical analysis and research, and to enhance the technological culture of the financial community.

Why Study in Barbados

Programme Details

The programme will consist of seven (7) core courses (3 credits each) covering the basic tools and techniques required by all Banking and Finance specialists, followed by a subset of approved electives (3 credits each) allowing for some level of concentration in a particular field of Banking and Finance. Students have the option of replacing two electives with a practicum (6 credits) at a relevant institution, which would allow students to utilize the theoretical skills acquired during the programme. Students also can opt to produce a research paper (9 credits), which will allow students to conceptualize and implement a research project. Alternatively, students can replace the research paper with three electives (3 credits each). Taken together, a total of forty-five (45) credits is needed to complete the degree.

This programme is self-financed. The tuition is internationally competitive and the university offers scholarships, financial aid and payment plans to make university education available to our students. Please click here for details on fees and financing options.

University Registration Fees (as of August 2023) = BDS $540 per semester:
One-time fee for an ID card (as of August 2023)  = BDS $30

To qualify for entry, candidates should normally possess a Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Honours in Banking, Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Management Studies, Accounting, Science,  Technology or a related discipline from an internationally accredited university. Candidates who do not meet the above entry requirements, but who have other relevant qualifications and substantial experience, will be considered for entry on a case-by-case basis.
