The Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences houses a variety of research programmes in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Ecology, Environmental Sciences and Microbiology. Both Undergraduate and Postgraduate research in these and related areas are supported.
Faculty members pursue research in accordance with their areas of expertise. Current research areas include
Molecular Disease Markers,
Environmental Microbiology,
Turfgrass Management,
Coral Reef Ecology,
Climate Change,
Water Chemistry,
Membrane Technology,
Theoretical Chemistry and
Toxin Detection.
Undergraduate research projects offered and supervised by faculty members are supported during the semester and in the summer. Undergraduate projects are often part of ongoing research programmes. Postgraduate research is undertaken in both research-based (
MPhil or PhD) and taught (
MSc) graduate programmes. Some of the ongoing research in the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences is featured below.
The Cave Hill Campus Bioenergy & Biofuel Research & Development Project focuses on biochemically producing various types of biofuel. The program has a heavy focus in biochemistry (particularly microbial biochemistry) and investigates the use of biochemical conversions for biofuel production.
