The Internship Courses in the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences are part of the commitment of the UWI Cave Hill Campus to developing stronger linkages between the UWI and industry. The Internship courses correspond to different majors and are listed below:
- BIOL3501 - Professional Placement for Biologists (Students majoring in the Biological Sciences)
- CHEM3990 - Professional Placement for Chemists (Students majoring in Chemistry)
- ENSC3090 - Professional Placement for Environmental Science (Students majoring in Environmental Science)
Students undertaking an internship course will have the opportunity to develop various technical competencies typically unavailable on the Campus. Those who successfully complete this course will not only hone their skills in critical and creative thinking, but will be more effective communicators, with improved interpersonal skills and workplace readiness.
The Internship Programme provides students with a formal internship for approximately four weeks at a relevant private sector, public sector or non-Governmental organisation. During the internship, students undertake agreed upon activities relevant to their course of study. They work under the guidance of a workplace supervisor as well as an on-campus supervisor then submit a report and make a presentation within the Department at the end of the internship.
Student CVs will be circulated to potential workplace supervisors and the course coordinator will assign placements to the mutual satisfaction of the students and host organisations. Students must attend the orientation workshops and may have to attend an interview before embarking on the professional placement.
