Dr. Adrian Als

Deputy Dean (Academic Affairs) - Faculty of Science and Technology

Lecturer in Software Engineering and Computer Systems Architecture

My research primarily focuses on the application of technology to provide solutions for real life problems. Whereas earlier works dealt with error-control codes and optical buffering simulations, my latter contributions have dealt with both health and assistive technology applications. Digital Signal Processing has been a common thread most of the publications.

  • PhD. (Sheffield Hallam), 2004
  • MPhil. (UWI)
  • BSc. (UWI)

Research Areas

  • Optical Communication (All Optical Buffering)
  • Digital Communication (Error Control Codes)
  • Digital Signal Processing
  • Assistive Technologies
  • Android Application Development

Main Research Projects:
  • SmartCane/BluKane – Development of an obstacle avoidance and navigational assistive technology system for the visually impaired.
  • Refreshable Braille Display – The development of a low cost assistive technology solution to assist the visually impaired with reading electronic documents.
  • The 5th Umpire – Digital signal processing techniques are employed to analyse audio signals to help adjudicate edge and bat-pad decisions in the game of cricket.
