Before Applying

• What is the difference between full-time and part-time student status?

Students who undertake a full course load (usually 4 - 5 courses) are considered full-time even though the courses maybe delivered in the evenings and on weekends. 

A part-time student is one who undertakes half of the course load and therefore takes (usually) twice as long as a full-time student to complete the same programme. 

Fees in the table for UGC-funded programmes are the annual full-time fees.  A part-time student in a UGC-funded programme is billed 50% of the full-time rate annually. 

Research students who are employed for more than 12 hours a week must register as part-time.

• What if the programme I want to do is offered at another Campus?
You should apply directly to the Campus which offers the programme you wish to follow. Click here for the websites of the St. Augustine Campus,  Mona Campus, Open Campus and the Five Islands Campus.

• What is the difference between applying to and registering for a programme?
Applying to a programme means that you are seeking to be enrolled in a programme of interest.  Re-entry applicants (those who had withdrawn from the programme and have been given permission to re-join) are also considered to be applying for enrollment.

Registration means that you can enroll to fully participate in courses. This happens after you have been made an offer, and have accepted it. You will now be eligible to register on-line during the published registration period.

Applying to a programme does not guarantee that you will be made an offer.

• I applied last year but did not take up my offer or defer. Do I have to re-apply?
Yes. If you did not accept the place, or accepted the place offered but did not defer you will need to re-apply. Due to space constraints, your application documents would not have been retained.

• Can I apply for more than one programme?
Yes. You can prioitise and choose a first option and then a second option from the list of programmes.
However, you can accept only ONE offer and you can be enrolled in only ONE programme at a time. 

If you are already in a programme at the UWI or elsewhere you will therefore need to complete your programme of study or withdraw from it before enrolling in a current one.

• What do I need to complete my application?
How do I submit an application for a postgraduate programme?

Is there a deadline for applications? 

The deadline for applications for the Semester I intake is  January 31 of each year. 

 

Do I have to list all of the schools and institutions I have attended? 

Applicants should list the post-secondary/high school institutions they attended in the Academic Record section of the application form. 

• What are the general application requirements?
Application requirements vary by programme. To find out what is required for your particular programme of interest, please visit our Programmes page.
 

• What are the entry requirements for Graduate Certificates, Diplomas and Taught Masters Degrees?
The minimum requirement for admission to Graduate Certificates, Diplomas or Taught Masters degree programmes is a minimum GPA of 2.5 or a Lower Second Class Honours degree or its equivalent.

The Campus Committee for Graduate Studies and Research may allow admission with Pass degrees on a case-by-case basis.
 

• What are the requirements for research students?
All applicants to research programmes must contact the Faculty/Department directly with their research proposal before submitting an application. This is necessary to first determine whether current resources exist in the department to support your research.

• Where can I obtain information about a programme?
Explore the many options for Taught Masters, Specialist DM (Doctor of Medicine) Degrees, and Research Masters and Doctoral Degrees by searching our database or browsing through our programmes by Faculty on our Programmes page.

• Where can I find out about the cost of programmes?
Postgraduate programme fees fall into two categories:

(i)  Self - financed programmes and 
(ii) University Grants Committee (UGC) - Funded programmes.

For self-financed programmes, students are responsible for 100% of the cost of their programme. In some instances students of self-financing programmes might obtain a scholorship from a local, regional or internationl organisation.

For UGC-funded programmes, students should check with their government to ascertain what portion of fees the government covers. Barbadian nationals may view information on Government Sponsorship here. For more information view our Programme Fees page.

• Is there an application fee?
Yes, there is an application fee for all students:
The application fee is BBD$30/USD$15 for citizens of UWI contributing countries.
The application fee is USD$30 (approximately BBD$60) for citizens of non-UWI contributing countries.

• When do I pay the application fee?

If for some reason you do not pay the application fee when you submit your application, you can make your payment via the Cave Hill Campus Fees portal or in person to the cashier at the Cave Hill Campus.

Payment may also be made by wire transfer, bank draft or money order. For further information visit the Student Financing website. Note that applications will not be processed unless the application fee is received.

• If I change my mind about beginning my graduate school journey this year, can I get a refund on the application fee?
There is no refund, waiver, or deferral of the application fee.

Financial Aid

• Are there any scholarships available for postgraduate students?
A number of postgraduate awards are available to students undertaking full-time research degrees (Master or Doctor of Philosphy). A few scholarships are also available for Taught Masters programmes. Visit the Scholarship and Funding page for more information.

 

• What are Research Awards?
The Staff Research Awards and Postgraduate Research Student Awards Funds provide monies to support the research of academic, senior administrative and professional staff as well as research students. The aim is to provide financial assistance to as many members of staff and research students as possible to enable them to adequately carry out their research, and communicate and publish the results of research.

• Which scholarships are available for Taught Masters programmes?
The UWI (Cave Hill) Co-Operative Credit Union scholarships and the De La Rue scholarship provide support for a few students in Taught Masters programmes.

• Who is eligible for scholarships?
Prospective, newly admitted and continuing students are eligible to apply for scholarships, however, prospective students should note that scholarships can only be awarded after they accept any offer of admission.

• How do I apply for a postgraduate scholarship/research award?
Applications can be completed via online forms to gradstudies@cavehill.uwi.edu. Prior to completing the form, please review the instructions on the Scholarship and Funding webpage.

• When is the deadline for scholarship applications?
Unless otherwise stated in the regulations for a specific scholarship, the deadline for all applications is May 30 of each year.

• What is sponsorship?
Sponsorship refers to the payment of all or some part of a student's fees by a third party.

Sponsorship does not cover University fees which are the responsibility of the student and are payable every semester on registration.

Countries which contribute to the running of the University have various policies governing sponsorship. It is the responsibility of students to check with their Ministry of Education (or designated department) regarding the policy of their country. Letters indicating what portion of fees will be covered by the sponsorship must be submitted direct from the Ministry to the University addressed to ???.

• What is the Barbados Government's Policy on sponsorship of Barbadian Nationals?
The Government of Barbados has identified two categories of programmes and criteria for sponsorship for Barbadian students in:
(i) University Grants Committee (UGC) supported programmes for students with First Class and Upper second Honours degrees;
(ii) Programmes considered as "Areas of National Significance" for students who are registered in all classes of degrees are considered.

Cave Hill Online, commonly referred to as CHOL, is the portal which students use to view important official information, documents, handbooks and notices on academic matters such as registration and examinations.

• Whom should I contact for specific questions about my programme?
You should contact your programme Coordinator, also referred to as an Advisor. Your programme Coordinator knows the full details of your programme and is able to guide you on a semester by semester basis on the choice of courses or related matters. You will be introduced to your programme Coordinator at your formal orientation, prior to registration, if not sooner. If you miss orientation or are unable to contact your programme Coordinator, you may contact the customer service centre for assistance at gradstudies@cavehill.uwi.edu.

 

• I'd like to get advice on which courses to register for this semester. Whom should I contact?
Before you select your courses, you are expected to meet with the programme Coordinator to discuss your programme, your individual circumstances, and the recommended courses to take. For new students this meeting will likely take place immediately following your faculty and departmental Orientation during Registration Week.

• How do I register for classes?
Registration is the process by which you formally select the courses you will take each semester and pay your fees. This is completed online via CHOL. Your registration is not complete until you have paid your fees or made suitable arrangements with the Bursary through the Student Accounts section.

• Are there any support systems in place to guide me through the registration process?
This is a peer supported system that connects each new student to a Registration Buddy (a trained continuing student). The "buddies" are scheduled as a pool of resources to provide online live chat support to new students through the registration process. Read more about the Registration Buddy System.

• Are payment plans available to students?
All fees are due in full at registration. If you are unable to pay your TUITION, ECONOMIC COST &/ OR ACCOMODATION fees in full at registration you may apply online for a payment plan after completing your course registration. Find out more about payment plans.

Note that University Fees (Amenities and Guild Fees) must be paid in full and cannot be included in the payment plans.

• What is the general course of study for Graduate Certificates, Diplomas, Taught Master's and DM degrees?
The course of study for a Graduate Certificate, Diploma or Taught Master's degree includes the required courses and supervised research work culminating in the submission of a research paper or project report, except as otherwise stated in approved programme requirements.

The subject of any such research paper or project report shall be recommended by the relevant Head of Department to the Campus Committee for approval not later than two months before the date of submission of the research paper or project report.

• What is the general course of study for a DM (Doctor of Medicine) degree?
The course of study for a DM degree includes both an academic programme and clinical rotations covering all aspects of the discipline over 4 to 7 years depending on the discipline. For all disciplines, it is necessary to be attached to an accredited hospital or to be assigned to clinical duty. All DM candidates are required to complete successfully a research project or case book before the final examination.

• What is the course of study for research degrees and professional doctorates?
A candidate for the MPhil, PhD, Md or professional Doctorate is required to complete the specified number of credits or coursework along with any other work as may be approved by the Campus Committee on the recommendation of the relevant Head of Department, and to pass the appropriate examinations before submitting the thesis:

(A) For students enrolled in an MPhil degree, a minimum of 6 credits should be taken through courses, and for students enrolled in a PhD programme, a minimum of 9 credits should be taken through courses.

(B) For students upgrading from MPhil ro PhD, their MPhil courses will contribute to the course requirements for the PhD.

(C) Students entering either the MPhil or PhD degree already holding a Taught Master's degree in a similar discipline may apply to the Campus Committee for exemption from the course requirements of the research degree.

• I have accepted my offer of admission but I would like to change my postgraduate degree to another programme. Can I change programmes?
Students may request to change their postgraduate programme by following the below steps:
1. Write a formal letter to the Head of Department requesting the change. This letter can be sent via email as an attachment.
2. Recommendations on the request are made and then passed to the School for Graduate Studies and Research.
3. The School for Graduate Studies and Research makes a decision based on the recommendations of the Head of  Deapartment.
4. The School for Graduate Studies and Research writes to the student indicating the decision on the request.

• Do students have online access to the Library?
Yes, the Sidney Martin Library at the Cave Hill Campus is a part of UWLLinC - the information portal for UWI information resources including UWI's intellectual output, subscribed resources (electronic journals, databases, electronic books) and the library catalogues of the four UWI campuses. Click here to access UWIlinC.

• Do students have access to health insurance?
Yes, the sagicor CariCARE Medical Assistance Plan is a major Medical Plan which assists students in the payment of medical expenses. This plan does NOT cover Vision, Dental, Maternity and Annual Physical Examinations. Read more about the Health Insurance.

Examinations and Grading

• What is the Grade Point Average (GPA) system that is used for grading?
The School for Graduate Studies and Research has implemented a Grade Point Average (GPA) system for graduate certificates, diplomas, taught master’s and professional doctorate programmes. This is applicable to all post graduate students who enter the University from August 2021. View full details here. 

• I would like to check my research paper to ensure my academic integrity. How can I access TurnItIn?
Visit the Turnitin.com website to check your research paper/project/thesis/dissertation.

You would need to use the credentials that were sent to you via campus messaging service (i.e. via your email). If you did not receive this information, please contact us at the School for Graduate Studies & Research at gradstudies@cavehill.uwi.edu.

 

• What happens if a student is suspected of cheating?
The University defines cheating as “any act intended to benefit one’s self or another by deceit or fraud.”
 
A student must not directly or indirectly give assistance to any other student, or permit any other student to copy from or otherwise his/her papers, nor accept assistance from any other student or use any other student’s papers.
 
If any candidate is suspected of cheating, or of attempting to cheat, the circumstances will be reported in writing to the Campus Registrar. The Campus Registrar will refer the matter to the Chair of the Campus Committee for Graduate Studies and Research. The Chair shall appoint an Investigating Committee to conduct an investigation. The candidate may be invited for an interview.
 
If the candidate is found guilty of cheating or of attempting to cheat, the Committee may recommend to the Board for Graduate Studies and Research that the candidate be disqualified from the examination concerned, or disqualified from all his/her examinations taken in that examination session; or disqualified from all further examinations of the University for any such period of time as it may determine.
 
A student may appeal to the Senate from the decision of the Board for Graduate Studies and Research. Appeals against decisions of the Board for Graduate Studies and Research shall be received by the Campus Registrar within two weeks of the date on which the decision is communicated to the student.
 

• What is the University’s policy on plagiarism?
The University defines "plagiarism" as the unacknowledged and unjustified use of the words, ideas or creations of another, including unjustified unacknowledged quotation and unjustified unattributed borrowing:

• "Level 1 plagiarism" means plagiarism which does not meet the definition of Level 2 plagiarism;
• "Level 2 plagiarism" means plagiarism undertaken with the intention of passing off as original work by the plagiariser work done by another person or persons.

 
These Regulations apply to the presentation of work by a student for evaluation, whether or not for credit, but do not apply to invigilated written examinations. Read more on the University Regulations on Plagiarism.
 

• My Graduate Diploma/Taught Masters degree requires a submission of a report or research paper. What grading is required to be awarded with a distinction?
In the case of Graduate Diplomas and Taught Masters degrees which require the submission of a project report or research paper, a distinction is awarded to candidates who achieve an average of 70% or better (Grade A) in the written courses and a mark of 70% or better in the research paper or project report. A student failing a course (including an elective course) required for the completion of the programme shall be ineligible for the award of distinction. Failure in a co-requisite course or in a qualifying course shall not exclude the student from receiving a distinction.
 

• My Graduate Diploma/Taught Masters degree only consists of courses. What grading is required to be awarded with a distinction?
In the case of programmes assessed entirely by coursework, students must obtain an A grade in at least 70% of the courses and the average mark of all courses must not be less than 70% to qualify for distinction. A student failing a course (including an elective course) required for the completion of the programme shall be ineligible for the award of distinction. Failure in a co-requisite course or in a qualifying course shall not exclude the student from receiving distinction.

• What is required from MPhil and PhD degree students to be conferred with an award of High Commendation?
The award of an MPhil/PhD shall be conferred with high commendation where the Examiners are unanimous in their recommendation that such an award should be made.
 
In the case of Professional Doctorates, candidates must also have attained a Grade A average over the coursework component of the programme, and a candidate failing a course (including an elective course) required for the completion of the programme shall be ineligible for the award of high commendation. Failure in a co-requisite course shall not exclude the student from receiving high commendation. High commendation will not normally be awarded to candidates who have exceeded the time limits for registration.

General Student Requests

• How do I apply for a leave of absence?
Please complete the Application for Leave of Absence Form and submit the completed form to your head of department for approval.

• How do I request a transcript?
An Official Transcript is stamped, sealed and signed, and the mailing address of the receiving Institution/University must be submitted. A Student Copy is not stamped, sealed nor signed.

You may request a transcript by one of the below methods:

• Email  -  Download and complete the Transcript Request Form and return it to  records@cavehill.uwi.edu.


There is a processing fee of BDS $10.00 for each transcript/letter of certification. Please note that Undergraduate and Graduate transcript records are printed separately.

The estimated time for processing of transcript requests is 2-3 business days.

 

• What is the process to replace a certificate?
Please complete and submit the Request for a replacement certificate .

• What is the process for applying for a student status letter?
Students can select and complete the relevant  request form for Student Status letters here.
 
Please allow 2 - 3 business days for the processing of status letters.  Letter will be sent by email to your mycavehill email address.  If you prefer, letters can be collected from the School for Graduate Studies and Research in the Postgraduate Teaching Complex or the Student Enrolment & Retention Unit in the Leslie Robinson Building on the Main Campus on presentation of  your student ID card. This should be indicated on the form. 

• How do I apply for re-marking of an examination script?
Students who are desirous of having their examination script(s) re-marked, may complete and submit the online request form Request for Remark of Examination . Completed forms should be submitted to the Assistant Registrar, Examination Office.
 
There is a non-refundable fee of BD$130 to have this process completed.
 

• I would like to change my postgraduate degree to another programme that better suits my needs. Can I change programmes?
Students may request to change their postgraduate programme by following the below steps:
1. Write a formal letter to the Head of Department requesting the change of status. This letter can be sent via email as an attachment.
2. Recommendations on the request are made and then forwarded to the School for Graduate Studies and Research.
3. The School for Graduate Studies and Research makes a decision based on the recommendations of the Head of Department.

• I‘d like to change my full-time student status to part-time. How do I make this request?
Students may apply for the transition from full-time to part-time, or vice versa, by following the below steps:
1. Write a formal letter to the Head of Department requesting the change of status. This letter can be sent via email as an attachment.
2. Recommendations on the request are made and then forwarded to the School for Graduate Studies and Research.
3. The School for Graduate Studies and Research makes a decision based on the recommendations of the Head of Department.
4. The School for Graduate Studies and Research sends formal communication to the student indicating the decision on the request.
 

• I am currently an MPhil student but would like to upgrade to PhD status. What do I need to do?
If you are an MPhil student and want to be considered for upgrade to PhD status, review the steps you will need to take at: Upgrading of Registration.
 

• I am required to submit a research paper/project/casebook for completion of my degree. What is the process for the submission for examination?

• How can I apply for an extension on the time limit for submission of a research paper/thesis?
Please complete and submit the Application for Extension of Time Limit Form.

• I have been Deemed to have withdrawn (DTW). What does this mean?
If a student fails to register for courses within the stipulated time, in accordance with the Regulations (1.55) they will be Deemed to have Withdrawn from the university and are no longer considered a student.
 

• I have received a notice that says “Required to Withdraw (RTW)”. What does this mean?
If a student fails two (2) or more courses in a semester, they will be Required to Withdraw (RTW), in accordance with the Regulations (1.56).

• I previously withdrew from my programme. Can I be readmitted?
A student who has withdrawn, been deemed to have withdrawn or required to withdraw can be readmitted subject to approval by the Campus Committee. A student can reapply at any time. See Regulations (1.58)

Graduation

• Is there a minimum Grade Point Average required for graduation?
In order to be eligible for the award of a Graduate Certificate, Diploma, Taught Master’s, or Professional Doctorate, a student must have a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.00. This is applicable to all post graduate students who enter the University from August 2021 and thereafter.
 

• When is Graduation usually held?
Graduation Ceremonies for the University are held in October. The specific date and relevant information about the graduation will be uploaded to the Graduation website by the third week of September.
 

• How will I know if I am eligible for graduation?
The Examinations Office will officially inform you regarding the completion of your studies.  Furthermore, when the Graduation website is live, there is a status checker that you can use to determine whether you are eligible. You may also speak to your Programme Coordinator for further clarification. 

• If I’m not attending the ceremony, how will I get my certificate?
If you are not attending the graduation ceremony, you can collect your certificate from the Examinations Section on Main Campus.  You will be notified via your campus email address when your certificate is available for collection. 
 

• Can someone collect my certificate on my behalf?
If someone is collecting on your behalf, they should produce a Letter of Authorisation signed by you, along with their photo ID. The letter should be emailed to exams@cavehill.uwi.edu .

• I live outside of Barbados and I’m not able to attend the graduation ceremony. How will I get my certificate?
Students who reside outside of Barbados will be able to utilise the courier facility, for a fee, to have their certificate delivered to their current home address. 

International Students

• Do I need to have a visa to study in Barbados?
All persons coming to Barbados to study are required to apply for a Student Visa before arriving in the country. Application forms must be submitted via the Student Affairs Admissions Office, to reach the Barbados Immigration Department before the start of your programme.

Students from countries which require transitting through another country before arriving in Barbados may also need to obtain a transit visa and should check to verify these requirements in good time.

• What is required when sending my international academic transcripts?
Non- UWI graduates must arrange to have degree granting Institution(s) send transcripts directly to the [Senior] Assistant Registrar, School for Graduate Studies & Research at gradstudies@cavehill.uwi.edu. Transcripts may also be sent in sealed envelopes by regular mail, courier or hand delivery to the [Senior] Assistant Registrar, School for Graduate Studies and Research, The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, St. Michael, BARBADOS. Please note that a student copy of your transcript will not be accepted.

• My academic transcript is not in English. Can I submit it in a foreign language or do I need to have it translated?
Transcripts not in English must be accompanied by a certified English translation.

• If English is not my first language, do I need to take the TOEFL or IELTS exam?
If you are an applicant from a non-English speaking country, or whose first language is not English, then you are required to provide satisfactory evidence of your competence in the language at the time of your application via the TOEFL or IELTS exam.

• Are there scholarships available for international students?
A limited number of partial scholarships may be awarded to outstanding international students. Please contact the International Office at internationaloffice@cavehill.uwi.edu to inquire about scholarships.

• Are there any resources to assist with finding housing in Barbados?
The Cave Hill Campus has three Halls of Residence, two of which are located at the Main Campus site and one five minutes walk from the Main Campus. Additionally, students can opt to live off-campus. • What other resources are available for international students?
The UWI Cave Hill Campus has an International Office within the Student Enrolment & Retention Unit which offers support to international students throughout their journey and to help you adjust to the new customs and culture in Barbados.

Offers of Admissions and Acceptance

• What are the specifications for submitting my acceptance photo?
1. 51mm × 51mm (5 cm × 5 cm /2 in × 2 in)
2. No shadows on face or in background
3. No sunglasses; face obstructions, or hats
4. No borders
5. Must not be older than 6 months
6. Front view, full face, open eyes, closed mouth, and natural expression
7. Full head from top of hair to shoulders
8. White background
9. Normal contrast and lighting
10. Head coverings and hats are only acceptable due to religious beliefs
11. Sunglasses or other accessories detracting from the face as defined above are not acceptable unless required for medical reasons (an eye patch, for example)

• How will I know if/when an offer of admission has been made?
When your application has been processed and an offer of acceptance is made you will be notified via email. Email can sometimes go into Spam/Junk folders. Applicants should therefore check these folders periodically when expecting a response to an application.

• Once I receive an offer of admission for my programme, what are the next steps?
Your offer of admission will be sent to you directly via the email address you provided on the application form, and this will include instructions for responding to your offer.

• I would like to accept my offer of admission but I'm unable to start this semester. Can I defer my admission?
Yes, When you receive an offer of admission you can request a deferral of admission. To complete this, please submit a formal letter with your request to the School for Graduate Studies and Research. The letter should be sent, as an attachment, to gradstudies@cavehill.uwi.edu.

• Why was my application not accepted?
You may not have been accepted because:

• your application had outstanding documents,
• your transcript was incomplete,
• your referee reports were not supportive,
• your application was submitted after the deadline,
• your application did not satisfy the entry requirements, or
• your research proposal was not substantial

• Will there be an orientation for new students prior to the start of the semester?
Yes, new students will receive an invitation for an offical orientation from the School for Graduate Studies and Research.

Research and Professional Doctorate Students

• Which research degrees are offered at the School for Graduate Studies and Research?
Research and professional doctorate degrees offered at the University include MPhil (Master of Philosophy), PhD (Doctor of Philosophy), DBA (Doctor of Business Administration) and DM (Doctor of Medicine) degrees.

• What are the entry requirements for DM (Doctor of Medicine) Degrees?
The minimum requirement for admission to a DM degree programme is a GPA of 2.5 or a Lower Second Class Honours degree or its equivalent, unless the Campus Committee for Graduate Studies and Research in any particular case otherwise decides.

• What are the entry requirements for MPhil (Master of Philosophy) Degrees?
The minimum requirement for admission to MPhil programmes is a GPA of 3.0, or an Upper Second Class Honours degree or its equivalent, unless the Campus Committee in any particular case otherwise decides.

• What are the entry requirements for PhD and MD Degrees?
The minimum requirements for admission to PhD and MD programmes:
(a) Approved graduate degree awarded primarily for research;

(b) Taught Master's degree from the UWI or another approved University, provided that the Master's programme included a research component of at least 25% of the total credit rating and the applicant achieved at least a B+ average or its equivalent;

(c) Approval of an application for upgrade;

(d) Such other qualifications and experience as the Board for Graduate Studies and Research may accept.

• What are the entry requirements for Professional Doctorates?
The minimum requirements for admission to professional Doctorates and Taught Master's degree in an appropriate field from the UWI or another approved University, having achieved at least a B+ average or its equivalent, and possessing the required experience in the field (as specified in the relevant programme requirements).

• What is the general course of study for Graduate Certificates, Diplomas or Taught Masters and DM degrees?
The course of study for a Graduate Certificate, Diploma or Taught Master's degree includes the required courses and supervised research work culminating in the submission of a research paper or project report, except as otherwise stated in approved programme requirements.

The subject of any such research paper or project report shall be recommended by the relevant Head of Department to the Campus Committee for approval not later than two months before the date of submission of the research paper or project report.
 

• What is the general course of study for a DM (Doctor of Medicine) degree?
The course of study for a DM degree includes both an academic programme and clinical rotations covering all aspects of the discipline over 4 to 7 years depending on the discipline. For all disciplines, it is necessary to be attached to an accredited hospital or to be asigned to clinical duty. All DM candidates are required to complete successfully a research project or case book before the final examination.

• What is the course of study for research degrees and professional doctorates?
A candidate for the MPhil, PhD, MD or Professional Doctorate is required to complete the specified number of credits or coursework along with any other work as may be approved by the Campus Committe on the recommendation of the relevant Head of Department, and to pass the appropriate examinations before submitting the thesis:

(a) For students enrolled in an MPhil degree, a minimum of 6 credits should be taken through courses, and for students enrolled in a PhD programme, a minimum of 9 credits should be taken through courses.

(b) For students upgrading from MPhil to PhD, their MPhil courses will contribute to the course requirements for the PhD.

(c) Students entering either the MPhil or PhD degree already holding a Taught Master's degree in a similar discipline may apply to the Campus Committee for exemption from the course requirements of the research degree.

• Am I required to attend research seminars during my course of study?
Students enrolled for an MPhil degree must satisfactorily complete at least two research seminars, to be convened by the relevant Head of Department, prior to the submission of their MPhil thesis.

Students enrolled for a PhD or MD degree must satisfactorily complete three such seminars. The upgrade seminar will count as one of the three seminars for the PhD, provided that it is not the last seminar.

Assessment of students' seminars must be included in their Progress Reports. Students enrolled in Professional Doctorates must satisfactorily complete research seminars as specified in Programme requirements.

• Does the School for Graduate Studies and Research have any resources that can guide me in the preparation of theses/research papers/projects/casebooks?
Yes, please review and acquaint yourself with the recommendations of the Thesis Guide. This should be used to assist you throughout all stages of your thesis.

Candidates should also consult their departments for specific Faculty requirements.

• My supervisor has to submit progress reports. What does the entail and how often do they need to be completed?
A progress report details the work the student has done, provides an assessment of the work, indicates what remains to be completed and whether the student is on schedule.

Each chief Supervisor, or sole Supervisor as the case may be, must submit bianually (no later than January 31 for semester I and June 30 or Semester II) to the Campus Committee through the Head of Department, a report on the work of any candidate placed under his or her supervision.

Member of the Committee of Advisors are required to meet at least once per year with the student, and based on their meeting(s). shall submit to the Campus Committee, through the Head of Department, an annual report on the student's progress.

Your Supervisor should supply you with a copy of these reports, and you will be invited to verify that you have seen these reports. 

• I am required to submit a research paper/project/casebook for completion of my degree. What is the process for the submission for examination?

Visit the Turnitin.com website that will allow you to check your research paper/project/thesis/dissertation.
 
You would need to use the credentials that are sent to you via campus messaging service (i.e. via your email). If you did not receive this information, please contact us at the School for Graduate Studies & Research.

• What happens if a student is suspected of cheating?
The University defines cheating as “any act intended to benefit one’s self or another by deceit or fraud.”
 
A student must not directly or indirectly give assistance to any other student, or permit any other student to copy from or otherwise use his/her papers, nor accept assistance from any other student or use any other student’s papers.
 
If any student is suspected of cheating, or of attempting to cheat, the circumstances will be reported in writing to the Campus Registrar. The Campus Registrar will refer the matter to the Chair of the Campus Committee for Graduate Studies and Research. The Chair shall appoint an Investigating Committee to conduct an investigation. The student may be invited for an interview.
 
If the student is found guilty of cheating or of attempting to cheat, the Committee may recommend to the Board for Graduate Studies and Research that the student be disqualified from the examination concerned, or disqualified from all his/her examinations taken in that examination session; or disqualified from all further examinations of the University for any such period of time as it may determine.
 
A student may appeal to the Senate against the decision of the Board for Graduate Studies and Research. Appeals against decisions of the Board for Graduate Studies and Research shall be received by the Campus Registrar within two weeks of the date on which the decision is communicated to the student.
 

• What is the University’s policy on plagiarism?
The University defines "plagiarism" as the unacknowledged and unjustified use of the words, ideas or creations of another, including unjustified unacknowledged quotation and unjustified unattributed borrowing:

• "Level 1 plagiarism" means plagiarism which does not meet the definition of Level 2 plagiarism;
• "Level 2 plagiarism" means plagiarism undertaken with the intention of passing off as original work by the plagiariser, work done by another person or persons.


These Regulations apply to the presentation of work by a student for evaluation, whether or not for credit, but do not apply to invigilated written examinations. Read more on the University Regulations on Plagiarism.
 

• What is required for MPhil and PhD degree students to be conferred with an award of High Commendation?
The award of an MPhil/PhD shall be conferred with high commendation where the Examiners are unanimous in their recommendation that such an award should be made.
 
In the case of Professional Doctorates, candidates must  have attained a Grade A average over the coursework component of the programme, and a candidate failing a course (including an elective course) required for the completion of the programme shall be ineligible for the award of high commendation. Failure in a co-requisite course shall not exclude the student from receiving high commendation. High commendation will not normally be awarded to candidates who have exceeded the time limits for registration.
