The University of the West Indies

at Cave Hill, Barbados

Featured Staff: Creigston Brathwaite
As part of the role of the Human Resources Section in Launching and Adapting of The UWI Triple A Strategic Plan 2017 – 2022, we embarked on identifying two members of staff who emulate two of the five core values of the Strategic Plan: Student Centredness and Excellence. The two staff members chosen were Mr Creigston Brathwaite and Ms Nadine Babb.

Creigston Brathwaite

Creigston or ‘Creig’ as some referred to him, joined The University of the West Indies in June 2013 as a Security Officer in Campus Security Services. However, most may not know that prior to working at The University, Creigston came from an Information Technology (IT) background and as a result of this skill and experience, his role in the security department evolved.  The department was able to alter Creigtson’s role to meet the needs of the Department. The ‘Department IT Nerd’, as he calls himself, is assigned to the Control Room where he monitors the CCTV System, Emergency System, Fire Extinguishers Maintenance and Door Access Control Systems on a daily basis.

Apart from being the department’s nerd, Creigston is the father of one son and has many passions, some of which are: Graphic and Web Designing. However, the passion he is most zealous about is being a Member and a Certified Instructor of Fight Club.
Fight Club is a form of Self-Defense. It targets all age groups and serves as a means of guidance in situations such as bullying cases for both the bully and victim. Creigston indicated that in collaboration with the Director, Campus Security Services, initiatives are being instituted for students to gain training in Self-Defense as well as for The UWI Security Officers to gain training in Defensive Tactics. The passion for this initiative is where Creigston most demonstrates his Student Centredness and Excellence.
In the image shown, Creigston reveals a techniques students are taught to protect themselves.

At this point, Creigston indicated that he has found a niche for mentorship and creating good personal relations which was fostered from being a youth leader in church. Bringing this foundation into his work-life has assisted in grooming his desire to always have good public relations with students and staff.

When asked why he thinks he was chosen to be our spotlight member of staff, Creigston indicated that he liked working at the Cave Hill Campus and it shows in his duties every day.

Security Officer Creigston Brathwaite lives by this famous saying by Nelson Mandela “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” and he believes there’s something to learn every single day.

Keep up the excellent work Creigston! – HR TEAM
