FAQs
Is the campus safe?
Yes. Campus Security Services is responsible for the security of the Campus. The campus is patrolled 24 hours a day by a highly trained staff of security officers, senior security officers, a chief security officer along with the Director of Security to preserve and protect the university plant and the roughly 5,000 persons who constitute the campus community. As with most Universities, you are encouraged to use common sense and normal precautions to help ensure your safety.
What kind of health care is available?
All registered students are eligible to join the Cave Hill Campus Medical Assistance Programme. This plan provides insurance protection through a Comprehensive Major Medical Plan and covers most types of necessary medical expenses. The Plan, however, does not cover Dental or Vision care. The UWI’s Health Clinic provides primary health care, and is staffed by two full-time Nursing Sisters and a panel of doctors, four of whom visit the clinic regularly. Consultation with specialist consultants is available on referral to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, which is a modern University teaching hospital. Diagnostic dental services are provided monthly during the semester.
Do you require on-campus students to purchase a meal plan?
No.There are no meal plans. Students can purchase meals from the campus cafeteria which offers breakfast, lunch and dinner and the cafeteria kiosk which offers lighter fare. There are many places to get a meal close to the campus including KFC, TNT Barbeque Hut, Chicken Barn and Chefette Restaurant. Students can purchase meals based on their preference from the food stations located on the ground floor of the Students Guild.
Do I have to live on campus?
No. For students interested in living off-campus and for students who have not been allotted places in the Halls of Residence, the Off-Campus Accommodation site
www.chillhousing.com
should be useful. Most of the off-Campus Accommodation are located approximately 5 miles away from the Cave Hill Campus and there is public transportation available to the university. Students can also opt to use the campus shuttle.
How do I apply for housing?
Students are required to indicate on the application forms their need for housing. When this is done an official request is sent to the Halls Administrator for processing. The Halls of Residence may also require you to submit an official application form.
You can visit the following link for information on the campus' three residences
http://www.cavehill.uwi.edu/Accommodation
Is UWI located near the beach?
The beaches are less than 10 minutes walk away from the Campus.
