New Music Programme on Offer at Cave Hill
27 May 2022
This following the recent approval of the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Music to be offered in the new academic year by the Faculty of Culture, Creative and Performing Arts at the UWI, Cave HiIl Campus.
The programme is designed to help students develop the skills, knowledge and discipline needed to build a successful career, while simultaneously gaining a critical appreciation of Caribbean musical forms.
It will also allow students to perform, critically listen, review and assess music from across various genres and traditions, while developing technological skills for recording and distribution.
Dean of the Faculty, Dr. David Akombo, anticipates that the new BFA will contribute to the enrichment of musical scholarship in the region.
“The Caribbean is recognized around the world for its rich musical heritage in addition to being the birthplace of Steel Pan and other musical genres such as Reggae music. The BFA in Music degree in the Faculty of Culture, Creative and Creative Arts will open musical opportunities for both Caribbean and international students who want to experience an intellectually stimulating and innovatively creative music degree from the Caribbean," Dr Akombo said.
Head of the Department of Creative and Performing Arts, Andrew Millington, echoed similar sentiments.
"This is an exciting moment for the Cave Hill Campus and the new Department of Creative and Performing Arts. With this new degree programme, students will have a unique opportunity to nurture and explore their artistic identity, creating, performing, and exploring a range of musical forms with a key focus on Caribbean expression. And it is especially designed to provide the aspiring professional musician of the future with knowledge of the technology and the entrepreneurial skills to become globally competitive while being socially engaged, " Millington said.
The BFA major in Music is the third programme to be approved by the Faculty since it was launched 2020. It follows the introduction of the BFA Dance and BFA Music in Education in 2021.
Additional offerings from the Faculty include the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Arts, Bachelor of Arts in Caribbean Studies, and minors in Music and Cultural Studies at the undergraduate level. Postgraduate programmes are also offered in Creative Arts and Cultural Studies.
