The University of the West Indies (The UWI) at Cave Hill is thrilled to announce its partnership with key stakeholders in the development of agricultural lands at the Dukes Agri Industrial Park. Tillage towards crop growth and research has begun in earnest on the groundbreaking project which was made possible by the donation of 14 acres of prime agricultural land from esteemed benefactors Charles and Vanessa Edghill, and which marks a transformative step in advancing agricultural innovation in Barbados.
With the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Security, the Center for Agricultural Research and Innovation (CAGRI) has commenced the meticulous preparation of these lands. This collaboration epitomizes the power of a multi-stakeholder approach, integrating academic expertise, government support, and community involvement to foster sustainable agricultural practices and innovations.
The centerpiece of this development is the establishment of a vibrant community garden. This garden will serve as an oasis for community members, offering a dedicated space to cultivate a variety of vegetables of their choice. Beyond being a source of nutritious food, the community garden is envisioned as a hub for recreation and the promotion of healthy lifestyles, encouraging local engagement and fostering a sense of community spirit.
“We are honored to have the Ministry of Agriculture as our partner in this groundbreaking initiative,” said Dr. Michele Singh, Director of the Center for Agricultural Research and Innovation at UWI. “This collaboration is pivotal in advancing the National agenda for agricultural development, enhancing food security, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices in Barbados.”
The Dukes Agri Industrial Park is set to become a beacon of agricultural innovation, where cutting-edge research meets practical application for revenue generation. The project aims to accelerate the adoption of advanced agricultural technologies and sustainable practices, addressing key challenges such as food security, climate resilience, and economic sustainability.
This initiative also reflects UWI’s commitment to fostering educational opportunities, knowledge translation, revenue generation and community empowerment. By providing a platform for hands-on learning and collaboration, the university aims to inspire the next generation of agricultural leaders and innovators.
In the words of Charles Edghill: “We believe in the power of agriculture to transform lives and communities. This donation is a testament to our commitment to supporting sustainable development and innovation in Barbados.”
The Dukes Agri Industrial Park promises to be a landmark on the agricultural landscape of Barbados, setting new standards for innovation and community involvement. The University of the West Indies extends its deepest gratitude to all partners and stakeholders who are making this visionary project a reality.
