Who are we?
The Department consists of four Disciplines: Linguistics, Literatures in English, Modern Languages, and the Academic Literacies Programme.
Each Discipline has its own perspective. Click in each line to learn more about our BA programmes.
Our interdisciplinary MA in Caribbean Studies allows you to integrate these different perspectives into a single degree. Get more information about the
Literatures and
Languages programmes of the degree.

Our origins
The former departments of French and Spanish, Linguistics, and Literatures in English were amalgamated to form a single department, the Department of Language, Linguistics and Literature, in 1996. The new Department became the larger of the two departments in the renamed Faculty of Humanities and Education (the other being History and Philosophy). The Department presently comprises programmes in Linguistics, Literatures in English, Modern Languages and Academic Literacies.
